What is Bluesky? Is It Right For Your Business?
As new social media apps appear, companies may wonder if they should join the movement. Take, for example, TikTok. Three years ago only teens and tweens were using it, but now it has become a predominant social media app. Whenever a new social media app comes into the landscape, it is always best to see if it is beneficial for your company.
When I first heard about Bluesky, I decided to see what all of the anticipation was about. The app was released on the Apple App Store in late April, and users need an invite code to create an account. If users do not have an invite code, they are put on a waiting list on the Bluesky website. Some honest full disclosure – I signed up for the waiting list six weeks ago and am still waiting for an activation code via email. Ugh!
The screenshots on the App Store indicate that Bluesky is most similar to Twitter. After all, this app was conceptualized by the former Twitter CEO! The platform consists of a vertically scrolling interface with small round photos similar to a profile picture. The post formats are similar to Twitter, for they have a picture and text or hashtags. Also, there are icons under the posts such as comments, likes, and reposts, which mimic Twitter. Finally, it appears that users are able to use direct messaging.
I know what you may be wondering, and honestly, I am wondering this too: how is this different from Twitter? Unfortunately, I will have to wait until I get an activation code to answer that question! Needless to say, whoever is on the app currently is getting an exclusive look into whether this will become the new Twitter, and the rest of us are going to have to wait for the app’s public launch.
