Friends Don’t Let Friends Do Social Media Alone

A good friend will brush the hair out of your face right before you take a picture because a good friend wants you to present yourself in the best possible way–always. Your good friends at My Friend Betty Says want the same for you too! We know that managing social media accounts across different platforms (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, etc.) and through different voices (personal, professional) can get a little hectic. And in that chaos, well… the hair might fall in your face a little bit. Allow these tips and tricks to be the friend that brushes the hair out of your face when you’re creating your own content so that you may always present the best version of yourself.

1. Clean your camera.

Seems simple, right? It’s so simple it often goes overlooked! When you’re taking photos, albeit to post for yourself or as you collect content to send off to your social media manager, double-check that your camera lens is free of debris and smudges. This quick step will make your images and videos exponentially better. It’s great that you’re taking the time to collect content, so we want to make sure that effort doesn't go to waste with glared videos and hazy pictures!

2. Keep your formatting in mind.

What will the content you are collecting be used for? If the three images you are taking are intended to be posted together in an Instagram carousel post, make sure that you capture them in the same ratio. If the video you’re filming will be turned into a Reel, be sure to keep the phone upright in portrait vs. landscape.

3. Quit editing!

We all love a touch-up here and there, but please refrain from editing before sending an image off to a social media manager! And please refrain from over-editing when you're posting for yourself or on your personal account. If done poorly, edits can look unrealistic, out-of-touch, or tacky. Additionally, adding color filters, stickers, and text to media can exclude it from future use. Just stick to the original.

4. Keep a consistent voice.

Consistency creates authenticity. When posting for yourself or on behalf of your business, be sure to maintain the same pronouns used in the past (I vs. we). And be sure to keep the same voice and characteristics! If your audience knows the tone of your account to be nurturing and sincere, it may throw them off if suddenly your style changes to goofy or corporate. The same goes for the reverse.

5. Stop overthinking!

If you only take one thing away after reading these tips let it be this. Stop overthinking! There is no reason for you to poll 12 different people if you should hold the cup in your left hand or right. And definitely no reason you should break a sweat over “Hello.” vs. “Hey there!” When all is said and done, it’s just a post. Each post is an opportunity to reflect on what you liked and didn’t, what worked and what didn’t. Overthinking will only cause stress and hinder your organic growth and authentic voice.
