Tiny Change=Big Difference

Now that we are well into October and the school year is in full swing, we are finally organized around here. Do you remember when I asked you about TV time? How much is too much? I realized that with Diego’s busy schedule, the answer was simple. Although we don’t ban TV in our home, the bottom line is, Diego doesn’t have much time for TV or any electronics after school. Weaning him off all of the screens after a very crazy summer was the tough part. But I found this very simple and cheap solution. This dry-erase board. Isn’t it nice? All framed and everything? I bought it at Staples and it was the best $30 I have spent for my kitchen lately. No kitchen table yet.

This little white board has clear expectations. A little list of things-to-do and gentle reminders. Diego sees something like this on a much bigger dry-erase board at school so he is familiar and happy that there is a routine here as well. He wakes up in the morning and although we have been doing this for about three weeks now, he still checks the white board with hopes of me forgetting to write “brush teeth”. Ha!

Diego was arriving home from school in September exhausted and ready to surrender in front of Octonauts. Unfortunately, with homework, soccer and piano lessons on some nights, plus reading in English AND Spanish, there was not enough time. I make sure he gets time to play with his brothers and he only has two busy evenings after school. I started to realize that if he didn’t have clear and visible steps for our mornings and evenings, we were constantly disagreeing on how to spend our time.

I have been able to sneak in some screen time at the end of the day and it actually serves as a reward for Diego if everything on his list is done. Although our afternoons look structured, he has a big say-so on what he would like to do first or last. Also, writing down “play” is so vague and we have done everything from baking to art to running up and down hallways with Santi. That’s what I like to see- Diego interacting with his little brothers and not glued in front of some type of screen everyday.

How do you keep your kids organized after school or throughout the day? Would love to hear more tips!

Dinosaur Theme Birthday Party

Happy Monday!

How was your weekend? For us, this weekend was full of more birthday celebrations, lots of soccer, and a yearly block party. Our weekends are always social and because our family is far away, we embrace opportunities to see old friends and to make new ones!

The weekend activities also inspire me and I say perfect timing because next month is Santi’s 2nd birthday! Keep an eye out for that post because I’ll be using a lot of Pinterest ideas for a musical theme! I’m so excited! For now, here are some pictures from Diego’s 4th birthday back in our place in NYC. Enjoy! [Read more...]

Sunny Study Room

Hurray for this weekend’s project! Boooo to losing my Pink sun room and to not having a proper kitchen table yet. I’m still working on other projects around the house and I must stop using Pinterest because my list of home improvements keeps getting longer! ha!

What was super important to do was to get Diego (and us) organized for school. We already forgot the backpack once, misplaced a piano folder and Santi nearly spilled his milk all over the kitchen table while Diego was working on homework. So look!! New desk and new bookshelf! We had planned on doing this room around Christmas but realized we could all use it a little sooner. My babies are growing up…

Little details: We made sure the Lazy Susan included supplies (washable supplies!) for Santi too. There are 2 boxes of crayons, glue sticks, scissors, color pencils, tape and a roll of white paper that hangs on the side of the table (yay Pottery Barn designers!). The drawers hold notebooks and activity books. All easy access for Diego’s homework time. You should see Santi imitate Diego. I’ll have to capture a scene and share with you! [Read more...]

Ready to Read?

I had a dear friend email me yesterday with the news that her little one was expressing an interest in reading. Her exact words were, “Mami, show me how to read.” OMG. I. Love. It!!!
But how does one really do it? I’m not an early-childhood teacher or an elementary teacher but an English teacher for the secondary grades (disclaimer: yes, I make grammatical mistakes here and there…my passion is literature. ha!) but Diego started reading right before his fourth birthday (humble brag…now I’m being a mom) and these are some of the things that worked for him. “Worked for him” in the sense that he also expressed an interest in reading very early and these were the materials that I noticed he enjoyed. Did they teach him to read? I don’t know but they surely can’t hurt if you use them for your child. [Read more...]

If I Had a Classroom

Many of you already have the kids back at school or are preparing them to go back any day now. I know a few of you are teachers and are setting up your classrooms for the new school year. How exciting! As I mentioned to you before in my “Back-to-School Tips for You” post, a lot of bookstores and libraries have the back-to-school displays out and ready. I am preparing Diego for Kindergarten so on Friday we took a trip to Barnes and Noble and had an abundance of books to choose from to help ease those first day jitters.

Of all the books to choose from, we came across How Rocket Learned to Read by Tad Hills and we loved it! I thought about how if I was still teaching middle school, I would totally read this book to my students. I would read this book to any child. Rocket is an adorable puppy and a hesitant student at first. He chews on sticks under a tree and wants to nap instead of joining a little yellow bird who has set up a tiny classroom. The little bird decides to start lessons and begins by reading a story but pauses, creating a cliffhanger and leaving Rocket wanting more. Once this little teacher realizes that Rocket can’t read, she is determined to teach Rocket and Rocket starts to learn letters and begins to love stories. The beautiful pictures depict the changing seasons and the “school breaks” where we see Rocket waiting patiently yet practicing what he has learned, and excitedly awaits the return of his teacher.

What a great book for a reluctant kindergartner! I think that it would be great for older kids too so they can remember how amazing it feels when something new is learned. Check it out! I promise you and your little readers will love it!

Do you have any back-to-school favorites? Maybe we saw it at our bookstore? Would love to hear…and read!

Star-Spangled Birthday Party!

Angelique turns 9 to a Star-Spangled Birthday Celebration!

This post was written and contributed by my good friend Carolina Monroy. She throws the best parties and when I offered My Friend Betty Says to guests, she volunteered to share with you her creative party ideas and photographs! Thank you Caro!

Angelique was born on the 3rd of July 9 years ago. She is a lucky girl who always gets fireworks on her birthday. For this year’s party we decided on a good ol’ American celebration. A Star-Spangled Birthday Party!

I was drinking a nice cold Coke in a glass bottle one day and I thought… “What’s more American than a glass bottle of Coca Cola?” so I decided to use some empty Coke bottles as center piece holders. It was too hot for flowers so I bought some patriotic sequin star spray from Pier 1 and voila… a center piece! I then found blue cloth table covers with red and white stars. They were a good alternative to the regular plastic table covers that rip easily and are hard to keep in place. [Read more...]

A Summer Weekend Recap

Hi! How was your weekend? I am amazed at how much Jose and I need to accomplish over the weekend. I’m still pretty much stuck at home during the week so when Saturday arrives it’s, “ready, set, GO!” around here! I am very lucky to be able to stay at home with my kids and recuperate on Mondays from the exhausting but fun weekends.

On Saturday we went to a very good friend’s 3rd birthday pool party. The boys had an amazing time! What a great idea for a summer birthday. My friend Diana looked so relaxed as she hosted and every child had so much fun. No need for entertainers or a mess at home! The weather was also perfect: warm enough to swim but overcast skies. No sunburns here.

Quick snack between laps!

I also finally finished book one of the Fifty Shades Trilogy. Can we all say, WOWSERS? [Read more...]

Postcards to the Library

Last week we received a summer reading list from Diego’s new school. He is about to enter Kindergarten in the fall and they are already preparing him for academic life! Haha! I was impressed by the 14 pages worth of wonderful books to pick from! Everything from notable picture books to biographies to non-fiction, and award winning ones too! There is definitely something for every little reader on the list. We were excited to head to the library right away to start reading and dive into the postcard activity also required by the school librarian.

For every book that Diego reads, he is to send in a postcard to his school’s library documenting a little bit of his summer activities and a quick summary of the book. I explained to Diego that even though we are not traveling this summer, the directions were clear that we could send postcards from home. It will be fun to pick up postcards around town for him to send out. Today he documented Grace for President by Kelly S. DiPucchio on a postcard depicting Diego Rivera’s art work we happen to have bought during our trip to the MoMA a few months ago.

I’m grateful for new reading suggestions and for the “homework” Diego is to do over the summer. As the long, hot summer days lie ahead of us, and with a new baby in tow, planned activities such as this one is a life saver for me. Diego enjoys reading and I love introducing him to new topics, ideas and adventures through books. This all coincides with our babysitter working in France right now and Diego receiving a few postcards from her travels! So many teachable moments already!! How nice to grab a book after a long day at the pool?

Does your school provide a summer reading list? If you are a teacher, isn’t this a great idea to implement for your students?

Wordless Wednesday

No words from me today, just Diego’s. (Found this in the art pile as I have started my collage project).
