For the Lovers of Languages

krong

We just bought Krong by Garry Parsons at our school’s book fair! Of course it’s a huge thumbs up from me. This adorable book introduces kids to different languages (knot in my throat as I read the Japanese to Diego). The pictures are bright and along with the narration, the characters have conversation bubbles over their heads-always a hit with Diego! The best part? Spanish is included as well!

There’s a little mystery in the short plot and the gift given at the end of the story helps our little protagonist crack the “code”. Diego read the book before me but insisted I read it aloud to him. This one will be in and out of our bookshelf for a long time to come. Perfect for all ages.

Do you know of other picture books that introduce kids to different languages? Please share!

Three Easter Baskets

easter baskets

Remember last year? I was pregnant but decided to buy an extra basket for the baby. I knew I would want the boys to all have the same one this year! I spent a little extra at Target for these just to be able to re-use them and I’m glad I did! They are sturdy, easy to store and just the right size.

Anywho, the boys are getting toothbrushes again, snacks that we always keep around the house, a book, and a hollow chocolate bunny. I don’t go crazy with the candy (none for Jordi). I think a chocolate bunny is important and a few M&Ms are definitely okay! The new items this year: 2 games for Diego, puzzles for Santi, and a shape sorter for Jordi. I also included coloring books and bubbles! Oh and chupones for the little ones. Hey, they are not cheap and if they want them… jajaja!

The books:
Just last week, Diego expressed an interest in Three Tales of My Father’s Dragon. I hope he’s surprised!

For Santi: Eric Carle’s ABC

For Jordi: Baby Touch and Feel: Cuddly Animals

Are you almost done with your baskets? What are some other good ideas for filling?

Lessons from Weekend Sports

If you are a sports fanatic or just live with one, you couldn’t avoid the number of games and matches going on this weekend! Let’s just say it got a little crazy! Around here, the boys talked and watched everything from fútbol (Euro Cup and World Cup qualifiers), to boxing, to tennis, to basketball,  and even to horse racing. Besides everything being so exciting, there were many surprises with upsets, controversies and bad decisions in the big world of sports. So much had to be explained to Diego as he bragged or cried over final scores.

It’s really hard for young children to deal with competition and losing. It’s hard when they are the ones playing a sport or a game and don’t win. We have noticed that Diego gets upset even when his favorite baseball or soccer team lose on tv! And when he does win, he loves to brag!

Not long ago, I bought Diego the book, “I’m the Best” by Lucy Cousins to help me explain to him how everyone has different talents, different strengths and different interests that make us good at something or not. It’s hard to watch professional athletes give interviews and be so “confident”, as they brag about their skills, predict big wins and talk bad about opponents. How do we prevent our children from modeling that kind of behavior? Kids love and look up to athletes but it is up to us, the parents, to teach them the great act of sportsmanship. I pull out this book quite often to remind Diego how bragging makes other people feel and that we simply are not the best at everything.

As Diego switched team preferences while watching a Euro Cup match because his team of choice was losing, I realized that even though we talk about this a lot, we don’t have a book for the boys about dealing with winning and losing. I love to use books to reiterate a message I am trying to instill. So I went on Amazon and came across:

Winners Never Quit by Mia Hamm  is about a little girl who storms off the soccer field when her team is losing and she has to learn a hard lesson from her team. If you have a little sore loser at home, this book looks perfect. I know I will be getting it! I want to teach my sons how to lose gracefully and how to win without boasting.

Do you have any good book recommendations or tips for little sports fanatics? Like everything with a young child, this too is a milestone that takes effort from parents and children to achieve together. Conversation is key and we will keep the discussion going!

Have a fantastic week!

Not A Box…or a Stick or a Bag

My recent discovery of the Caine’s Arcade video reminded me of the award-winning preschool book, Not a Box by Antoinette Portis. We don’t own this book but I see that she has also written Not a Stick and I’ll think I’ll order both for my boys soon!

Not a Box is about a bunny who imagines that his box is anything and everything! He pictures and creates objects from a spaceship to a racing car. It’s beautifully illustrated and it’s a simple, creative book. I read it to Diego at the bookstore and he loved it as my boys also love to play with boxes, paper towel rolls, and paper bags! This book is fun for kids but a great reminder for parents not to over-schedule or buy every toy the kids desire. We should let kids play with whatever is lying around ready to be recycled! You’ll see their imagination, just like Caine and the bunny, take off!

Here’s a picture of Santi painting on a paper bag that I taped to the kitchen floor so I could cook in peace!

Click on Not a Box for info to purchase! Would also love to hear about your child’s creative projects done with recycled materials!
