College Kids-What They Really Want

August 13, 2013

nytimes
It’s that time of year again! It’s back-to-school for everyone but a lot of attention is paid to tiny children and their first academic days. We can’t forget that some of the oldest of the bunch are going far away to a university for the first time and they will have some normal anxiety too.

Our niece, Cindy, just graduated from Kansas State but her little sister is off to St. Louis to start her first year! As an expert college boarder, Cindy helped me compile this list of ideas for the college bound person in your life. Some of these tips are great for kids staying close to home too because all college kids can use a little help…

1) Gift Cards: Amazon for books, Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts, Chipotle (or other favorites), and gasoline cards for their cars!

2) Cleaning supplies: Clorox wipes, detergent, air fragrance…

3) Dorm decor: Throw pillows, candles, picture frames (with a great pic of course!).

4) Favorite homemade baked goods.

5) A good water bottle (Camelback is great!) and a nice travel mug too.

6) Medical kit.

7) College gear: Tshirts, sweatshirts, baseball cap…

8) Good ol’ $$$$! Because what college kid doesn’t need a little extra cash? 😉

I know that some like to give family and friends an envelope with a monetary surprise. Others like to make up baskets and care packages. Whatever you decide, it is never too late. Nine months away can get anyone homesick. I like to send a surprise at any time of the year. I even sent Cindy a stack of magazines once…just because!

Can you think of anything else we might have missed?  Please share!

I enjoyed this post, Betty. Currently, my daughter is looking into colleges and we plan on making college visits in the fall, and it looks like she’ll be going away for college. This post is a nice insight into what we need to keep in mind to make sure she’s well taken care of. Would it be possible to have your nieces provide your readers with a little insight on tips for college success? (what every freshman should know, what to expect, etc). I think both my daughter and I would benefit from a little heads up on the whole experience. Thanks and I wish you continued success on your blog, it’s one of my favorites, and I’ve even gotten my daughter to read it, she follows you on Twitter.

Betty, I would add maybe a gift card to Target or Bed Bath and Beyond so that college kids can get some stuff for their dorm, like bedding or bath items. I remember going off to college and my mom and I went on a crazy spree buying all those things that you take for granted when living at home but realize you have to buy when you leave!

Bedding! So important!!! Kids should have about 4 sets because you know they won’t be doing laundry as often as mom does 😉
      Thanks for the comment!

Great list of ideas! I have a few cousins in college right now and more cousins headed to college soon. I like to surprise my smart cousins from time to time for their best efforts for a better future. I think students appreciate every extra help they can get from family. 🙂

My nephew will be going away to Iowa State university next week. My husband and I put together an essentials basket for him with toothpaste, shaving cream, shampoo, paper cups and plates, and all the other basic things you can never have too much of. We also go him a Bose wireless Bluetooth speaker, because who doesn’t like to listen to music?! 😉
