I was recently reading an article about common mistakes people make on LinkedIn that led me to an article about the profile pictures we use on social media. As I looked around fellow bloggers and even my husband’s business connections, I found it so interesting that so many professionals are adding head shots as part of their new and updated resumes.
While applying for a job in Japan six years ago, I had to include a passport-size picture with my resume. I thought, “how strange!” Today, here in the States, more and more people are using Facebook, LinkedIn and even Twitter to make career connections. It makes sense, having a nice profile picture is engaging and research shows that a profile with no picture will be passed over for a profile with a picture; a new reality.
Professional photographer, Mallika Malhotra of mikifoto, took my recent head shot and gave me three professional tips to share with you:
1) Invest in professional makeup and hair. These experts know what looks good on camera and can help you look your best. Just don’t go overboard and do anything too fancy. You want to look like yourself. Plus, confidence comes through when you know you look good!
2) Wear clothes that make you FEEL and look great. I always recommend a pop of color that compliments the eye color. I also like simple patterns that can add interest to the photo. Avoid overdressing or using busy patterns.
3) Find a photographer that you feel comfortable with and who understands you and your business. This is key! Your portrait is very revealing and if you don’t feel relaxed, it will show. Your head shot should show off your unique personality. It should be engaging and interesting.
